Since the Garden of Eden, one of the constants in our world has been the reality of warfare. There have been big wars and small wars, lengthy wars and relatively brief wars. World wars, civil wars, wars of independence, religious wars, preemptive wars, undeclared wars, and cold wars.

But there has been a particular war or battle that has been raging for more than 2,000 years or so that has largely been overlooked. It’s a battle that, from its inception, had enormous implications for the early Christian church, and it’s a battle that continues to this day. This particular battle is not some trifling political debate, nor is it a mere disagreement or misunderstanding about preferences. And the stakes for this battle have never been higher.

What is this particular war, and why should it matter to us today?
