Ever watch a sporting event and see someone holding up a sign with a Bible verse on it? These signs always seem to use the same verse: John 3:16, which invites anyone to believe in Jesus and receive God’s eternal love. But when was the last time you saw someone at a game hold up a sign that said ‘Luke 9:23’? You know, the one that invites us to deny ourselves and to die daily? Probably never. Not quite as appealing an advertisement for Christianity, is it?

Verses like Luke 9:23 remind us that following Jesus is a narrow, costly, uncomfortable path – something the people in this week’s message found out the hard way.
